Graduated in Philosophy from the University of Porto and PhD in Photography from the Derby School of Art & Design, UK (Ph.d.,Mphil/Ph.d./MA).
Between 1996 and 2000, she received grants from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Portuguese Center of Photography. In 1996, she was awarded the Distinction Prize by the University of Derby. Her research focuses mainly on Documentary Photography, which is her main field of interest.  Her connection to the Polytechnic of Porto began in 1992. He is currently president of the School of Media Arts and Design (ESMAD) at P.PORTO, a lecturer on the PhD in Artistic Creation at the University of Aveiro (UA), in partnership with IPP and IPL, and a lecturer on the Masters in Cinema and Photography (ESMAD). She was president of the Technical-Scientific Council, director of the Image Arts Department and coordinator of the Master's Degree in Cinema and Photography between 2009 and 2014 at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE).
She collaborates with the following research centers: CCRE, FAUP, eCPR/South Wales University and the Research Center at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). She is an integrated member of the ID+ Research Center, in the Media Group, ESMAD/P.PORTO /UA.She combines academic activity with artistic expression as a photographer, participating in various solo and group exhibitions and film productions.Latest solo exhibition, Nadir Afonso, no tempo e no lugar, at the International Photography Festival, DIAFRAGMA, 2025.
