Mirian Tavares has a PhD in Contemporary Communication and Culture from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and a Master's in Communication and Semiotics from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). 
She is the Coordinator of the Arts and Communication Research Centre (CIAC) and a Full Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Algarve (UAlg). She is also Director of the PhD programme in Digital Media Art, taught in partnership between the University of the Algarve and Universidade Aberta. 
At international level, she is vice-president of the International Association for Computational Art - ARTECH-Int, which she co-ordinates with other important roles at national level. She has been involved in more than 26 scientific projects, in many of which she has played a general coordinating and/or institutional coordinating role. 
She has participated, by invitation, in more than 130 national and international conferences and has more than 70 articles published in reference journals, recognised nationally and internationally. 
As a result of his intense scientific activity, he has published 17 books and 67 chapters in highly recognised works in his field of study. 
In total, more than 70 masters, doctors and post-docs have defended their degrees under her guidance.
She is the Director of Rotura - Journal of Communication, Culture and the Arts and has coordinated two editorial collections: Coleção Humanitas and Coleção Processos de Criação. She is Associate Editor of the journal Frontiers - Communication/Visual Communication. She is a member of the Scientific and Editorial Boards of several indexed international journals.
She regularly participates in various cultural magazines, with more than 90 texts published in this area. He has also written texts for Room Sheets and Art Catalogues, which together total more than 60 contributions. 
She is a member of the curatorial team of the Portuguese Contemporary Art Network, and has curated more than 48 art exhibitions.
