Isabel Aboim Inglez
Lisboa (PT), 1971
She has a PhD in Cinema-Design from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (2016), with a thesis entitled ‘Design as a constructor of space in (animated) cinema’, and holds a degree in Cinema-Image (1993) and a degree in Film Directing from the Lisbon School of Theatre and Cinema (2000), and Film and Image from the Lisbon Higher School of Theatre and Cinema (1993). She undertakes independent work in film directing (fiction and animation), cinematography, lighting design and creation for theatre, photography and illustration.
She has worked in film as a Director of Photography, Assistant Director, set assistant and on the cinematography teams of notable figures including Wim Wenders, Fonseca e Costa, and João Cesar Monteiro and Pedro Caldas. In theatre, she has designed lighting for productions by Carlos Pimenta, Fernanda Lapa, Luís Castro, Teresa Sobral and Rui Pina Coelho, with whom she has also collaborated on creative work.
All her films since 1998 have been supported by the ICA and screened at various national and international festivals, winning several awards. Of particular note is her latest work: ‘Idade Óssea – Um filme em sete Quadros’ 12 (2022), an experimental film currently in national and international circulation, represented by Portugal Film.
He exhibits regularly in the field of photography, participating in group projects and solo exhibitions, notably ‘A Imagem Contextualizada’ at the Photographic Archive, ‘Prata da casa’ as group exhibitions, and ‘Casaaabsoluta’ (Photographic Archive), ‘Transparências’ (Pickpocket Gallery – supported by FGC), ‘ARCO’ (parts A and B) and ‘HIATO’ in various venues across Lisbon and the Quase gallery in Porto. She also presented a video project at the ‘Studiolo XI’ exhibition at the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation. Her work is featured in the associated publications and catalogues.
Since 1995, she has taught courses in photography, animation and design, initially at the António Arroio Secondary School of Art (Photography-Cinema-Video), at ACARTE/CITEM-Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (animation) and, since 2005, at ESAD.CR (Image and Design). Between April 2018 and November 2023, she was coordinator of the Sound and Image degree programme at the same school. Since 2025, she has been Coordinating Lecturer in the Audiovisuals department at ESAD.CR
